To Tube or not to Tube
Some studio engineers have said that tubes make your sound warmer.
Now honestly I really don’t know what that means in terms of sound.
What is a “Warmer Sound”
I think it comes down to your own ears and your own personal preference. I have had both TUBE and Solid State microphones and
Mic Pre Amps. The only difference I could tell was with tubes the sound seemed to cut through a little better. Not a whole lot better, just a bit better, but those were my ears listening.
At the moment I have what I would call a split system. A solid-state microphone paired with a tube mic pre-amp and to me, the sound is just great.
In the end, the best thing to do is to demo certain Tube and Solid state microphones and Mic Preamps. Let your ears be the judge.
It also depends on what you are using the mics and preamps for.
If its music, I would think you want the best overall sound possible.
If it is for “Voice” only to be used in narrations and commercials and things of that nature, I would say going solid state all the way would be just fine and provide you a good sound.
Till the next blog,
Always Project your voice!
